Schola Cantorum Gent

Schola Cantorum Gent

Land: België
Dirigent: Filip Martens

It cannot be determined exactly when the first Ghent Schola Cantorum was founded. The Schola Cantorum probably worked since the Middle Ages continuously, until the changing political, social and economic structures in the early 19th century. In 1928 the old tradition of the Schola Cantorum was restored with boys from the Episcopal college Saint Lieven and a men's choir of seminarians and laymen from the city. Since the 1970s the choir is mixed and consists of enthusiasts, whether or not musically trained. Some of them started although a professional singing career.

At the top of the choir's annual program is the luster of celebrations in Saint Bavo's Cathedral on holidays and exceptional liturgical ceremonies, such as ordinations and burials of bishops. For this the choir was founded at the time and to this day the Schola Cantorum is faithful to this command. For the celebrations in Saint Bavo's Cathedral is drawn from a large range of Gregorian chants and polyphonic sacred works from all periods and genres of the Western choral music. In addition, the choir works on annual concerts, whether or not in collaboration with other choirs.

For more than 90 years now the choir has proven time and again that ecclesiastical choir music should not be boring, old-fashioned or even outdated. An orchestral cantata, requiem mass or oratorio, a contemporary a cappella work, or ancient Gregorian chant, ... always enchanted by chant.
